Last year, for Christmas, we decided that my dad's siblings and their significant others would all get handmade things just for them. Which made my life a lot of fun, and I've been toying with patterns for most part of the summer - among other things, I finally got to try a few patterns by Johanna Lindahl, better known as Mija Crochet. This hat is The Fisherman's Hat - for my uncle Inge. He's been a fisherman at least for as long as I can remember, and it just seemed appropriate to make a pattern that reminds me of traditional fishermen's hats and a new stitch I just learned called the Bamboo Stitch. Supplies:
Abbreviations (US terminology): CH - chain HDC - half double crochet SL - slip stitch ST - stitch SK - skip BAMBOO ST - bamboo stitch (tutorial by the crochet shop) DC - double crochet DC2TOG - double crochet two together Pattern notes: The pattern repeat of the bamboo st is 2 - so if you chain or sc 70, you will have 35 bamboo stitches. If you chain 40, you will have 20 bamboo stitches. The simplicity of that is what makes this stitch pattern so great, because it's an easy repeat. Make sure to watch the whole tutorial for the bamboo stitch, and keep it handy if you're feeling unsure - I know I had it open at all times the first few times I used it! Pattern:
Brim: with 5mm/H hook Row 1 Ch 17, hdc in second ch from hook, hdc in next 15 (16) Row 2 Ch 1, hdc first st in both loops, hdc next 14 in back loops only, hdc last st in both loops Row 3-46 Repeat row 2 Sl st edges together, ch 1 and switch to 5.5mm/I hook Hat: Row 1 Sc 70 evenly around the brimg (ca 3 sc per 2 rows of hdc) Row 2 Ch 2, hdc in each st around, (70) sl to join Row 3-4 Repeat row 2 Row 5 Ch 2, bamboo st in same st, ch 1, sk 1, bamboo, repeat around. (35 bamboo st) Sl to ch 2 Row 6-7 Ch 2, bamboo st in the ch 1 space all around, (35 bamboo st) sl to ch 2 to join Row 8 Ch 2, hdc 2 in every ch 1 sp, (70) sl to join Row 9 Ch 2, hdc in same st, and in each st around, (70) sl to join Row 10 Ch 1, sc2tog, hdc in next 6, +sc2tog, hdc in next 6++ repeat from + to ++ around and sl to ch 1 to join Row 11 Ch 2, bamboo st in same st, ch 1, sk 1, bamboo, repeat around. (31 bamboo st) Sl to ch 2 Row 12-13 Ch 2, bamboo st in the ch 1 space all around, (31 bamboo st) sl to ch 2 to join Row 14-15 Repeat rows 8 and 9 (60 hdc) Row 16 Ch 1, sc2tog, hdc in next 5, +sc2tog, hdc in next 5++ repeat from + to ++ all around, sl to ch 1 to join Row 18 Ch 2, hdc 1 in each ch 1 sp, sl to join Row 19 Ch 1, sc2tog, hdc in next, sc2tog, repeat around, sl to join Row 20 Ch 1, dc2tog around, sl to join. Finish Fasten off and cut yarn, then cut a second piece of long yarn and thread on a needle. Turn the hat inside out, weave in the tops of stitches, and pull together the hat. Fasten with a couple of stitches to make sure it stays together. Fasten off and weave in ends. Fold the brim, and if you feel like it put a few stitches to keep it folded for that old fisherman's feel. Please let me know if anything doesn't add up. I will translate and post the SWE version of this pattern in due time along with a few more sizes in english. Meanwhile, follow me on instagram and pinterest for more crocheting goofiness. If you do follow me, pretty please tag me on instagram if you make it - I'd love to see your take on this! Happy crocheting, Jenn

I really like this hat and am eager to try making it. My concern however is that this was designed for a man and I am a petite woman. What are your thoughts about this? Thank you!

Do you have any updates/changes for this pattern? Or is it fine just the way it is written? If you have updated this pattern, where can I find the update? Thanks so much.

Row 17's not actually included in the pattern. I assume (by repetition and context) that it's a single row of bamboo stitches, worked like rows 5 & 11.

When do you change hook size? Is hat part a 5.5mm? thank you, the hat looks great, making 2for Christmas gifts.

Hi Gigi Lee, sorry for the very, very late reply! I'll be revising all my patterns in the coming months, to make sure there aren't missing bits. Yes, the hat itself is made with the 5.5 mm hook while the brim is made with the 5 mm. I hope they were as big of a hit with your family as it was when I made it in 2017 :)

I've completed the 46 rows for the brim, and it is VERY small! Either my gauge is tiny or this is a hat for a small child. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi Lauren, sorry for the way, way late reply! I'll be revising all my patterns in the coming months, to make sure there aren't missing bits. The only thing I can think of is the gauge, yes, or that the yarn isn't the right weight? When I made the brim it did look small, but it stretches quite a bit. I would suggest trying another yarn with a heavier weight, or maybe crocheting a little looser? I know a friend of mine crochets very tightly and we never ever end up with the same result! I hope it worked out for you

Hi Jenn, I really like your pattern however round 17 is missing. I guess this is a bamboo stich?

Hi! I started this pattern with 54 rounds for the brim and I'm a bit confused about how to modify the pattern for future rounds. How many single crochets should I do around the brim? What does "ca" mean in the parenthesis?

Hi! I was wondering if you meant to do *sc2tog, hdc in next 5* for row 10? because that is a multiple of 7 which makes sense with a round of 70, while *sc2tog, hdc in next 6* is a multiple of 8 which doesn't divide cleanly into 70

Probably? I wrote this pattern while working it up, its never been tested and Ive only worked it the one time. Its more of a memory note at this point than an actual pattern, so if recommend working up whatever seems right and see how it works for you and then adjust accordingly if it doesnt. Happy corcheting!

Hi have you reissued corrected versions of any of your patterns, specifically hat and shawl patterns?
Reply
Hi Lynn! No, there's been no corrections and they have been unlisted as patterns on ravelry for that reason. I've only worked these patterns once and they've only been published for the sake of sharing things I thought were pretty, not because I knew what I was doing 😂
