For me this was a tricky one. I'd already used the glover stitch in the Ophrys Chunky Hat and I had every intention of using something different for this baby-adult combo, but nothing else spoke to me. The pattern in itself does have some similiarities with the Ophrys, though it makes for a tighter fitting hat, not to mention there's sizing options with this one, which the Ophrys did not come with. Due to the feel and color of these hats, and the way I reworked and actually calculated this pattern, I feel comfortable posting it as a different hat, even if it kind of it the Ophrys 3.0 - with a mini version!

Sizing
General sizing for heads by age:
3-6 Months 15-17” or 38-43 cm

6-12 Months 17-18.5” or 43-46 cm
12-24 Months 18-20” or 45-50 cm
24-48 Months 20-21” or 50-53 cm
5-10 Years 21-22” or 53-56 cm
Teen/Adult 22-23” or 55-58 cm

You take the sizes above, minus 3 inches/7 cm off of every size when you make a brim. So the crocheted brims will be the following:
3-6 Months 12-14” or 30-35 cm
6-12 Months 14-15” or 35-38 cm
12-24 Months 15-17” or 38-43 cm
24-48 Months 17-18” or 43-45 cm
5-10 Years 18-19” or 45-48 cm
Teen/Adult 19-20” or 48-50 cm

Supplies:
  • 6 mm hook / J hook
  • 6.5 mm hook / K hook
  • Chunky weight yarn, I used 1 skein of Robin Chunky in Rosebud for these, and had yarn left over
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations (US terminology):
CH - chain
SC - single crochet
ST - stitch
SL - slip stitch
Glover - glover stitch (tutorial on Meladora's Creations)
GL2TOG - Glover two together: start a glover stitch as usual by going into the front loop of the first stitch but instead of yarning over and going into the two loops next to it skip that ch 1 space and start another glover st in the next st over (3 loops on hook), finish as a usual glover stitch by yarning over (4 loops) and pulling up another loop (5 loops), and then yarning over and pulling through all loops on your hook - ch 1 as per usual to close the stitch (see pictures below)

For 6-12 months:
6 mm/J hook
Row 1
Ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3 (4)
Row 2 Ch 1, sc in back loop only (4)
Row 3-34 Repeat row 2
Slip stitch ends together, ch 1, turn the brim right side out

Row 1 Sc 38 evenly across the brim, sl to first sc to join (38)
Row 2 Ch 1, glover st all around, sl to top of first glover st to join
Row 3-6 Repeat row 2
Row 7 Ch 1, glover st, gl2tog, glover, gl2tog, repeat around, sl to join
Row 8 Ch 1, glover st twice, gl2tog, glover st twice, gl2tog
Row 9 Ch 1, gl2tog all around, sl to top of first gl2tog to join

Finish Fasten off and cut yarn, then cut a second piece of long yarn and thread on a needle. Turn the hat inside out, weave in the tops of stitches, and pull together the hat. Fasten with a couple of stitches to make sure it stays together. Fasten off and weave in ends.

For adult
6.5 mm/K hook
Row 1 Ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 5 (6)
Row 2 Ch 1, sc in back loop only (6)
Row 3-45 Repeat row 2
Slip stitch ends together, ch 1, turn the brim right side out

Row 1 Sc 48 across top of brim
Row 2 Ch 1, glover st around, fasten to top of first glover st
Row 3-10 Repeat row 2
Row 11 Ch 1, glover st, gl2tog (glover two together), glover st, gl2tog, repeat around, fasten to top of first glover st
Row 12 Ch 1, glover st in next 2, gl2tog, glover st in next 2, gl2tog, repeat around
Row 13 Ch 1, glover st, gl2tog, glover st, gl2tog, glover st, repeat around
Row 14 Ch 1, gl2tog all around, sl st to join

Finish Fasten off and cut yarn, then cut a second piece of long yarn and thread on a needle. Turn the hat inside out, weave in the tops of stitches, and pull together the hat. Fasten with a couple of stitches to make sure it stays together. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Please let me know if anything doesn't add up. I will translate and post the SWE version of this pattern in due time along with a few more sizes in english. Meanwhile, follow me on instagram and pinterest for more crocheting goofiness. If you do follow me, pretty please tag me on instagram if you make it - I'd love to see your take on this!

Happy crocheting,
Jenn
